Classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc flavours of tropical fruit, but more Sancerre-like with lengthy mid-palate development from prolonged period ‘sur lie’ with lees stirring. Tropical fruit with nuances of passionfruit, blackcurrant, citrus, gooseberry and capsicum combined with a richly textured mouthfeel and good length on the pallet. Food match: Seafood, chicken and lean meat dishes.
2011 was an excellent growing season with a mild early spring with very few and mild frost events, a good fruit set, no late frosts, and fruit harvested at optimal quality.
High quality, certified MS (Marlborough Selection) scions grafted onto 5C rootstock were planted into the windblown loess soils lying on two 300,000 year old river terraces (East and West) separated by the ephemeral Gibson’s Creek.Stony soils overlie metres thick of deep river silts, river stones and boulders which were initially deposited as outwash gravel plains by glacial meltwater before uplifting on the Alpine fault created the two river terraces. These in turn sit on ice-carved blue-grey alpine Jurassic greywackes richly injected with white silica veins. The vineyard is certified fully sustainable (SWNZ).
The grapes were picked in the cool of the morning, destemmed and lightly crushed. Low temperature multi-batch fermentation with carefully selected yeast strains was carried out in stainless steel followed by six months ‘sur lie’ with regular lees stirring.
