Church Bay (Hangaura), West end, Waiheke Island (NB Hangaura translated literally means ‘make red’!)
2011 was a challenging growing season but the rose clone achieved excellent early ripeness and flavour
The vines were grafted onto low-vigour phylloxera-resistant rootstock (3309), and hand-planted with close spacing and low fruiting wires in our North facing, North sloping block approximately 80m above sea level into drained clay soils, volcanic ash (from Rangitoto) over deep clay and underlying 155 million year old Jurassic rock. The vines were in their 9th year and the crop was reduced to a mere 1.5kg per vine.
The fruit was selectively hand-picked in the cool of the morning, destemmed, and lightly crushed in our state-of-the-art membrane press. After a short interval the juice was lightly pressed off the skins and run into stainless steel and chilled. After innoculation a long slow cool ferment was carried out over 6 weeks to obtain good extraction. Wine was lees stirred for several months before racking and bottling.
